M58 (spiral galaxy) Magnitude: 9.80
With dimensions of about 5'x2', this is one of the larger galaxies in this region. It is spindle-shaped, oriented NE-SW, and has a broadly concentrated center. There is a relatively bright star nearby to the west.
M58 is one of the 4 barred spiral galaxies in Messier's catalog (the others are M91, M95, and M109, though it is sometimes classified as intermediate between normal and barred spirals. It is one of the brightest galaxies in the Virgo cluster.
