Mythology of Puppis
The three constellations CARINA, PUPPIS and VELA originally formed part of the much larger constellation known as Argo Navis (The Ship). In 1763, Nicolas de Lacaille separated this into Carina (The Keel), Puppis (The Stern) and Vela (The Sails). Argo Navis had been associated from earliest times with great ships which saved mankind - Noah's Ark for example - but to the Greeks it represented the vessel used by Jason and the Argonauts in their quest to capture the magical Golden Fleece. When the voyage was over Athene placed the boat in the sky, curiously without a bow. (Or at least it is never drawn with one).
